Cara Roth Talks About Divine Self-Care {Interview}



One of the most amazing aspects of my work, hands down, is meeting incredible people who are on their own inspirational journey of loving transformation. There is a quality if divine presence when someone has gone through a painful experience and has been able to tap into the divine intelligence of the pain to alchemize it into wisdom. Cara Roth is a beautiful example of someone who has taken internal pain and transformed it into work that lifts and heals others.

And although we live in different countries, I am so very lucky that I can actually drive into Canada and within a few hours meet Cara for a beautiful meal. And in October, I did just that. Over a gorgeous meal of lovingly prepared Indian food restaurant in Vancouver, Cara and I {and my dear friend Candace} exchanged stories and laughter. Yes, this was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

I hope you enjoy getting to know Cara as much as I did and get inspired to go on your own journey to health and well-being.

Q. What does self-care mean to you?

Self-care means nourishing your mind, body & soul in a way where you can show up each day as your authentic self and be of the highest service to others. In my past self-care wasn’t even on my radar. I was taught to give everything to others and put myself last. It took me a long time to realize that it’s when we put ourselves first that the magic happens and we’re able to take care of those around us on an entirely different level.

It’s definitely part of my mission to bring awareness to self-care and supporting people to become more aware of what their needs are and how to nourish themselves in a healthy way.


Q. How did you get to this place of knowing that self-care is so important

I’m a natural giver. I always have been. I love to take care of other people, cook for them, and see them happy. For most of my life I couldn’t turn that attention on myself.

While I thought I was taking care of myself I can see now that I didn’t know what my body truly needed. I was disconnected. It took a pretty harsh wake up call for me to learn to love my self and realize the importance of self care.

In 2010, I suddenly couldn’t eat without being in severe pain. I would have a bite of a carrot and soon after need to lay down for hours. The pain was constant and for nearly 3 years it didn’t go away.

Now, I think it’s important to say that before this happened I pushed my body, physically and mentally, to the max. I’ve never been that taxed before so it was no surprise when things finally started to unravel.

Over the next several months I went to various doctors, naturopaths, healers and no one had any answers for me. I continued to eat a handful of foods that I could tolerate. I also began going to nutrition school and teaching cooking classes. On the inside, I felt ashamed because I was teaching people about health but I didn’t have it for myself. At that point, I hadn’t eaten a vegetable in about 6 months because of the pain. At one point I was even diagnosed as being allergic to food.

It took 2 people walking into my life to make me realize that I had no idea how to take care of myself. I had a moment when I was talking with an instructor about how to foster someone’s self-care. The idea was so foreign to me I realized that I had no idea how to show myself self-care.

From there I embarked on a journey of really getting to know me, what my body needed, and using food as a fundamental form of self-care. From there, slowly my symptoms began to get better. Thanks to a lot of hard work and a great support team I’m almost always 100% symptom free. I’m now in a place of being able to take my health to being optimal, instead of just managing symptoms. I have been able to achieve this level of health and wellness due to self-care. And now I have the blessing of doing work which supports others to do the same.


Q.  What are your top 3 Self-Care Tips?

Tip 1 – Firstly, start small. You don’t need to meditate for an hour every day. Or take a 3 hour yoga class a few times a week, or go on a holiday solo. Start with 5 minutes. In the morning, get up and doing something that you love. Make yourself a cup of tea, just sit and BE. Set a timer. Get up 10 minutes earlier to make the time if need be.

Tip 2 – Make the decision to have self-care your number 1 priority. Yes, you probably know you“should”take more time for yourself or reduce your stress but what actions are you actually taking?

Instead of huffing and hawing about it make a clear decision and declaration that you’re going to spend xx minutes per day doing something that nourishes your body, mind and soul. Once you’ve decided -DO IT! Remember that you are so much better able to take care of others once you take care of yourself. Take a leap and trust me on this.

Tip 3 – Treat yourself as you would a loved one. Would you talk to your children the way you talk to yourself in your head? I can guarantee not. Learn to love yourself just like you love your partner, your kids, your dog etc. This process takes time but I encourage you to be a witness and not a judge about your thoughts and actions and take small steps to shift those to be positive and loving.
