Jessica Locke Talks About Divine Self-Care {Interview}



Today’s interview brings together two of my passions, yoga and beautiful planners. A few weeks back, after connecting with the lovely Jessica Locke, I received a box filled with gold stars, sweet Italian candies and a gorgeous planner that was unlike anything I had ever seen.

This planner incorporates health and a wellness, motivation and SO much more. You simply must go check it out for yourself.

When you see the amount of love and care put into this planning book, you begin to get a sense of just how much love goes into anything Jessica does. I absolutely LOVE today’s interview and the beautiful perspective Jessica brings to the importance of Self-Care and the link to personal happiness.

I hope you enjoy getting to know Jessica as much as I did.

Q. What does self-care mean to you?

Recognizing that as women we are generally hardwired to care for others first. We excel at showing compassion, empathy, tenderness and selflessness towards others; often times at our own expense. Self care is like oxcytocin to me – its the “feel good” gasoline that our tanks (bodies/minds/hearts) require to keep going. Keeping some self care in our tanks allows us to move forward and continue to shine our light outward and radiate all those qualities in which we naturally excel.

Q. How did you get to this place of knowing that self-care is so important

I don’t think I was aware of my need for self care until life got so busy there was no time for it. When your younger self care comes more easily (and in different forms). As you mature and life becomes full to the brim with careers, families and commitments self care is forgotten for a while. And thats when I believe you come full circle back to it and realize how necessary it is to your well being. Its a natural part of a women’s life cycle – to come back home to herself and realize that her needs are not only valid but non-negotiable.

Additionally, I think it takes practice. At first self care seems like spoiling or self indulgence. But after time – like with meditation – you begin to understand its value and importance. And its not always a big investment in yourself either. Self care can be taken in little chunks – 5 minutes of visualization here, 30 minutes for a pedicure there, 10 minutes for reading a magazine or book, 7 minutes to walk outside and experience nature, etc. A little goes a long way!

Q.  What are your top 3 Self-Care Tips?

Tip 1 –  Focus on more than your daily to-do list. A vibrant life is built on much more than getting through a daily list of tasks. Productivity means many things. Exercise, gratitude, goal setting, meal planning are all important components too. This is the main reason I created my guide – “Keeping it Together”. I took my designs for a “life planer” that I wanted for myself to a graphic designer and they loved the idea.
Tip 2 –  Kindness towards others will cultivate kindness towards yourself. Live your life with abundance and abundance will flow back to you – I’m living proof of this.
Tip 3 –  For me yoga is definitely something I do for self care. The benefits of yoga are tremendous. On the mat I gain strength, flexibility, focus, increased breath awareness and equanimity. And OFF THE MAT I gain even more. For me this practice has been a life changer. And if I let it slip I notice a huge difference in how I show up to the world and to myself.

A bit about Jessica in her own words:

Hello! My name is Jessica Locke and I’m an entrepreneurial sort living and loving life in Central Florida. My educational background is in Merchandising (BA), Nutrition (BS) and Yoga (200 RYT) but I’ve really honed my skills along the way by being a small business owner. My husband and I have started and successfully run a number of small businesses throughout our 20+ years of marriage.

However, for the past several years I have focused my energies on my work as a Registered Dietitian and private Yoga Instructor. Additionally, I am the creator of “Keeping it Together – A Girls guide to Living Life to the Fullest”; a daily planner and gratitude journal for women. After years of trying to find a better way to track my daily tasks along with my daily intentions and personal goals for living my best life – I decided to design my own method. The “Keeping it Together Planner” is a result of that struggle.  The creation and success of the book has been hugely fulfilling for me. Seeing women flourish by using the planner has brought me tremendous satisfaction.

A home-based business allows me to work a lot but I make fun and family a priority. I am a huge college football fan and enjoy traveling to games with the hubby and daughter. Also, I attend yoga workshops and conferences when I can to keep learning and renew my spirit. And although a strong yoga is my primary form of physical activity, I also enjoy some tennis, weight training and walking with my girlfriends! I fill my heart with a spirit of gratitude, kindness and abundance and those intentions keep me on my daily path to a vibrant and sweetly satisfying life.
