Did you know that stress is the #1 cause of health problems – mentally and physically?
And did you know that stress and busyness can be an actual addiction???
And there are few things that stress us out on a consistent basis like work does, especially when it takes away from all of the other things that life has to offer.
The following example comes from an article written by author, doctor and speaker, Lissa Rankin for Psychology Today:
Person A: How’s it going?
Person B: I’m insanely busy. You know, the usual.
Person A: Yeah, me too. I’m scheduling into 2018 already.
Person B: I get it. Haven’t taken a real vacation in over a year.
Person A: Well, gotta count our blessings for being busy, right?
Person B: Amen.
It seems to me that too many of us wear busyness as a badge of honor. I’m busy, therefore I’m important and valuable, therefore I’m worthy. And if I’m not busy, forget it. I don’t matter.
In Daring Greatly, Brené Brown writes about numbing behaviors that we use as armor against vulnerability.
And lest you think numbing doesn’t apply to you, because you’re not hooked on cocaine or alcohol, she clarifies by saying, “One of the most universal numbing strategies is what I call crazy-busy.
I often say that when they start having 12-step meetings for busy-aholics, they’ll need to rent out football stadiums. We are a culture of people who’ve bought into the idea that if we stay busy enough, the truth of our lives won’t catch up with us.”
As I continued to explore WHY we are so busy, I realized that there are many reasons we consider non-busy people lazy.
We live in a society where we are pushed by external messaging to DO more, BE more, HAVE more… and if you stop for a second you develop the modern disease of FOMO – Fear of Missing Out.
If you’re here… you’re missing out on what’s THERE… if you’re THERE, oh my… what’s about what’s going on HERE.
And you throw in the never-ending mountain of NEW THINGS you’re supposed to WANT and NEED… and now you’re stuck in a cycle of not even remembering WHY you got so busy in the first place.
As the mama of a tween, married for 15 years and running a business… and now home-schooling… I GET IT… there are a LOT of things competing for my attention.
But the truth is, not ALL of those things NEED my attention.
As a teacher of Self-Care…. this is something I think about quite a bit.
