What does LOVE have to do with MONEY?

Earlier this week I drove to Vancouver, BC, to attend a book signing by Kate Northrup. She just wrote a book called, LOVE MONEYMoney: A Love Story. The room was jam-packed with enthusiasm and passion. Kate was joined on stage to talk money and love by Danielle LaPorte.

The amazing group of women who gathered to listen to Kate and Danielle were all stylish, beautiful women who exuded confidence and passion for their work.

Half of the evening was Kate and Danielle talking openly about their experiences, their stories and perspectives on money as it related to their journey to success.

The latter half of the evening was a Q & A session where women in the audience got to ask various questions about money as it related to their own business journey.

As each woman got up to ask their own question, I began to see this thread of common belief systems within this beautiful group of women. I realized that we each have this strange personal relationship with money, success and our unique path to attain our ideal vision of life.

The questions ranged from women asking about why they seem to have blocks in spending on their personal business development, to why they have blocks in raising their rates, to why they feel so deflated when a client is not happy with their work, even though they are already doing well with a handful of happy clients. There was even a Zen buddhist chaplain there talking passionately about how she gave away all her possessions and now gets things in return that have nothing  to do with money at all. Yet, even in that telling of the story, and in the giving away of her belongings, she still revealed some emotional relationship with money. We all have one.

In my own experience, I have known women who have grown up with the gift of family wealth, and others who have had to work hard for every dollar earned. Without fail, regardless of HOW we grow up, we all have some version of a strained relationship with money.

I began to think about why this is true? Why is it that some women don’t think twice about spending $1000 on a handbag, and others will go years before replacing a pair of boots that have long since lost their style and function.

While we all have different value systems and core ideas about stuff, we all live in this world where money is a reality and an energy that is all around us. We get to choose our relationship with it. There is definitely a missing piece here. We absorb so much of our belief system about spending and saving money from our families. Whether you grew up hearing “We can’t afford that!” or “Money doesn’t grow on trees”, or you saw your parents spend lavishly, it’s undeniable that we pick up money stories along the way.

I believe deeply that we are responsible for our present thoughts and our daily perspective. Yes, we do each come into the world with certain advantages and disadvantages, but it’s what we choose to do with them, because of them and despite them that shapes who we become.

Right now you can decide to change your story about money. Right now you can bring awareness to your thoughts on spending. Right now, you can choose to stop saying (ever again) “I can’t afford that”, and instead say “I choose not to spend money on that right now.” It’s a change in perspective, but a simple change in perspective can change your life right now!

At the core of what you choose to spend your money on is a belief that you are worth it and a belief that someone else needs to give you permission.

But I’m telling you right now, years can go by before you get that external permission. Nobody else can tell you what you’re worth. You get to define your values and your self-worth by how you choose to spend your money, time and thoughts.

I’m not saying this is easy. But it’s doesn’t have to take years either. You can decide RIGHT NOW that you are worth taking the time to create a new habit, to get that better quality item, to ask for exactly what you need or to say what you mean in the moment.

I believe that a woman who chooses to take divine care of herself on all levels is a woman who becomes a light in her own life. I believe that a woman who creates the space for stillness and self-care can create magic in her own life and inspire those around her to do the same. I believe that a woman who shifts her perspective and decides “I am worth it!” and “I am supported!” can create miracles.

It’s time to get clear about your relationship with money. It’s time to create space and allow the abundance around you right now to flow in. You don’t have to wait until you are making six-figures to take care of YOU right now. By investing in yourself {time, money or energy} you are letting the Universe know that you are ready. You are letting those around you know that you are not going to take any shit. You are letting the Universe know that you are divine.

So how can you invest in yourself today…RIGHT NOW? Leave a comment below and tell me what you can do right now to say YES to you?

Yes! I love treating myself to fancy PJs and loads of books because they make me happy. I also enjoy filling my wardrobe with stylish, colourful pieces that make my heart sing every time I look at them.

I’m reading Kate’s book as well, and it’s definitely challenging to heal my money love story! Still, that’s what I choose to do today to invest in me so I can manifest the grace and abundance I seek.

Thank you for writing this. Elena. 🙂

    Hi Otiti,

I love that! Fancy PJ’s rock. I bet you have a smile on your face as you drift off to sleep :)).

I wish you an amazing journey through Kate’s book. She really walks her talk and is an inspiration.

Thank you so much for commenting.

I loved this post Elena! You are so right that we all have our own unique relationship with money. I grew up with the subconscious belief that large amounts of money only come from men (dad or husband) and have powered their creations instead my own with the erroneous belief that they would then take care of me. Something worked hard to change in the past few years! Xx

So powerful & so true for so many reason. I grew up with a similar belief…that I needed permission from the man in my life to invest in ME. Luckily I married a man who helps & supports me in challenging the status quo and is open to all ways of being together.

YAY you for recognizing a belief system that no longer serves you.

Let’s rise up & make our mark while giving permission to ourselves to expand in abundance, success and self-love each day. By doing this, we inspire others around us to do the same.

How beautiful to absorb your experience and creative writing here.

I am so with you on this and if we’re going to make 6 figures we got to figure out a daily routine that involves the stillness and awakens the purpose that will get us there easily.

You’re inspiring us all, keep it up.

    Hugs, Grace

    Thank you <3

YES! You are so right. If we are to open up to the abundance, we need to create the space physically, emotionally and spiritually. When we get still, we allow and open.

My mantra lately is, "I am open & receiving". When I feel myself pushing or resisting…I simply repeat this and it works.

Thank you SO much for your beautiful comments and support.

    Hugs back to you,
